8. LIEUTENANT ICHABOD PALMER (1702–1749) (Ichabod, Gershom, Walter)

Ichabod Palmer was born on 25 October 1702 in Stonington. He was baptized on 10 January 1703 in Stonington. He died on 9 November 1749 in Stonington and is buried in the Palmer Cemetery in Stonington. He married Elizabeth Sanford Noyes of Westerly on 29 April 1729 in Stonington. [1]

On 29 August 1727 his father gave Ichabod a deed of land at Puckhunganuck that had been given to him by his father Gershom Palmer in May 1718 together with land he had bought from his brother Walter. [2]

Ichabod and Elizabeth were admitted to the church in North Stonington on 1 April 1733. [3]

Ichabod was commissioned ensign of the third Stonington military company in October 1737. He was commissioned lieutenant of the fifth company in October 1739. [4]

Ichabod Palmer, gentleman of Stonington, being of perfect health of body and sound mind, wrote his will on 13 January 1748/9. He mentions his wife Elizabeth Palmer, whom he named his executrix; his four sons Thomas, Ichabod, Elias Sanford and Peleg Palmer; his two married daughters Prudence Shaw and Elizabeth Utley; his four unmarried daughters Hannah, Mary, Lucy and Bridget Palmer; and his brother-in-law Thomas Noyes. He instructed that his children be taught reading, writing and arithmetic. He said that his son Thomas had received his portion and that his other sons were under age. He left land, a sawmill and livestock. A witness testified on 28 November 1749. An inventory was taken of his household goods on 19[?] November 1749 and it amounted to about 472 pounds. An inventory was taken of his land, buildings and livestock on 20 November 1749 and it amounted to about 7,864 pounds. Ichabod’s debts amounted to about 3,931 pounds.[5]

Elizabeth Sanford Noyes was born on 11 October 1706 in Stonington. She was baptized on 22 December 1706 in Stonington. She died on 24 December 1760 in Stonington and is buried in the Palmer Cemetery in Stonington. [6] She married Lieutenant Ichabod Palmer.

Elizabeth, the wife of Ichabod, Jr. was admitted to communion on 3 September 1738 with the North or Second Church of Christ in Stonington. [7]

i. Prudence Palmer was born on 28 February 1723/4. She was baptized on 1 April 1733 in North Stonington. She married Thomas Shaw, Jr.  on 14 September 1741 in Stonington. Thomas, the son of Thomas Shaw and Keziah Crane, was born on 15 March 1719/20 in Stonington. He was baptized on 19 June 1720 in Stonington. [9]

Thomas and Prudence named two of their children Ichabod and Elizabeth. [10]

Thomas, Jr. and his wife Prudence were admitted to the church in North Stonington on 17 August 1746.  They were referred to as “now of Voluntown” when their daughter Elizabeth was baptized on 28 August 1763 in North Stonington. [11]

iii. Elizabeth Palmer was born on 25 March 1728.  She was baptized on 1 April 1733 in North Stonington. She may be the Elizabeth Palmer Utley who is said to have died on 10 August 1798 and is buried in the School House Hill Cemetery in Spencertown, Columbia County, New York. She married Samuel Utley on 2 July 1745 in Stonington. Samuel, the son of Samuel and Hannah (Frink) Utley, was born on 22 August 1723 in Stonington. Elizabeth, the daughter of Ichabod, was admitted to communion on 16 June 1742 in North Stonington. [14]

Samuel might be the Corporal Samuel Utley who was on a list of Captain M. John Kinstry’s Company of the 15th New York Regiment in September 1776. He might be the Samuel Utley who was a lieutenant in the First New York Regiment (New York Levies) in the Revolutionary War. This Samuel is on a September–October 1780 muster roll of Captain Thomas M. Kenstry’s [?] company in Colonel William Malcolm’s first regiment. [15]

Samuel might be the Samuel Utley who was on a jury in the Court of Common Pleas in Columbia County in May 1787. He might be the Samuel Utley who headed a household with two free white males over 16 and two free white females in Hillsdale, Columbia County in 1790. [16]

iv. Captain Ichabod Palmer was born on 8 August 1730.  He was baptized on 1 April 1733 in North Stonington. He died on 7 February 1819 in Lenox, Madison County, New York. He is buried in the Cranson Cemetery in Clockville, Madison County. He married first Lydia Utley of Stonington on 11 April 17__. [17]

Ichabod is probably the Captain Ichabod Palmer who appears on the roll of the Eighth Regiment of Foot in the Connecticut Militia during the Revolutionary War. [18]

Ichabod moved to Lenox in Madison County. [19]

v. Hannah Palmer was born on 20 December 1733. She married Samuel Fish of Stonington on 22 January 1752 in Stonington. It is conceivable that Samuel is the son of Samuel and Sarah Fish, perhaps born between about 1716 and 1724.[20]
